Chinese New Year is celebrated by more than 20% of the world.
It’s the most important holiday in China and to Chinese people.
Therefore celebrating it here at RIC is also a must, to support the integration of our Chinese students in the college as well as an opportunity for everyone to learn about this fascinating culture.
Boarding houses and some classrooms and offices were decorated with Chinese red lanterns, door decorations, charms and posters of rat, 鼠 (shu in mandarin), as this year is the year of the rat.
Food in China is very important and is part of Chinese identity, tradition and culture. One dish in particular, the dumplings, is actually eaten every day during the celebrations of the New Year in China.
Some of our students challenged themselves in making jiaozi 餃子, which consist of a meat or vegetable filling wrapped into a rolled piece of dough, sealed by pressing the edges together. Needless to say, the results were amazingly tasty!
