On Wednesday 5th February sixth form Computer Science students were given the opportunity to visit Sota – the College’s new IT Services provider, based in the Kent Science Park. Along with a very informative talk on various aspects of networking, hardware and server architecture they also got to visit one of the company’s two data centres and the workplace recovery facility. The data centre provides a range of cloud computing services including virtual servers and compute power with multiple cores, gigabytes of memory and petabytes of storage. The workplace recovery facility provides space for up to 100 customer employees to come and continue working in the event of a disaster on their site, such as a catastrophic power failure or loss of Internet access. Although the College’s facilities are on a much smaller scale, students were able to draw significant parallels in the overall design, structure and features of our network with that of Sota’s and their more than 300 other customers. Overall, it was a great introduction to the real world of IT services that allow so many companies to function in our 24/7 digital world!
