Flax, Fibres & Plant Dyes: Kent Cloth

Over the past year Francesca Baur (RIC’s amazing textiles teacher) has been working hard on an exciting project named Kent Cloth.

“Kent Cloth will take you on a journey exploring European Linen to discovering natural colour and fibres in Kent.”

The project brings together Francesca’s love of textiles and the Kentish landscape; through the creation of natural, local textiles that embraces local heritage and landscape. Francesca grew flax around different locations in Kent, including the public Visitor Centre garden at the gallery and the Pines Calyx. The flax yarn, spun from Kentish Flax is on show as part of the exhibition. Additionally, Francesca grew dye plants at the gallery and the Pines Calyx, all of which can be seen in the series of amazing textile works she created that explore the landscape of 4 different destinations in Kent. These are being showcased at Rochester Art Gallery until the 4th of January 2020, so make sure you visit!
