Poetry Together is a project by Gyles Brandreth and the College’s parent company, Dukes Education. The initiative brings groups of school children and groups of elderly people together to perform a poem they have learnt by heart.
On Wednesday 16 October, students in Years 7 and 8 went to Montgomery Court armed with afternoon tea goodies. They recited four poems, The Letter A, Daffodils, Not My Business and Freedom. The residents were given sheets of the poems and all joined in together with the students. Our students then served afternoon tea handing out sandwiches, scones and cakes, which they had made themselves, to very willing tasters who commented that we had some brilliant chefs in our school. There was plenty of time for chitter chatter; shared stories and favourite football teams. Our students helped the elderly residents set up and learn to use their Google Home device which they tested out by playing some Elvis Presley and Beatles songs and having a wonderful group sing-along. All in all a wonderful afternoon spent with our people in the community and an incredibly rewarding experience.
Beginning on National Poetry Day on 3 October, the inaugural Poetry Together initiative takes place over two weeks ending on 17th October, 2019.
